PROCESS

This piece showcases the intricate artistry of shibori, an ancient Japanese dyeing technique that involves manipulating and compressing cloth similar to tie-dye.

The process begins with drawing on the fabric to envision and plan out the design, followed by stitching, compressing and binding the fabric. Stitching and tying hundreds of threads by hand makes this an especially time intensive process which can take up to an entire week. In this phase, the fabric is intricately manipulated to create resist areas where the dye is unable to fully penetrate. The fabric is then immersed into indigo and/or non-toxic dyes which penetrates exposed areas while the bound sections resist, resulting in distinctive patterns.

Shibori patterns are distinguished by soft, blurred edges, nuanced details, and subtle shade gradations. The uniqueness of these pieces lies in their countless minute variations. While the designs may initially appear structured, a closer look reveals the presence of human touch in every detail.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

We’ve taken the extra care to put our pieces through multiple thorough washes to minimize the risk of color transfer. This way you can rest assured that these textiles are ready to become a part of your daily life.

Using indigo and non-toxic dyes lets us create textile works that will age gracefully over time. For optimal longevity please consider the following recommendations:

  • Handwash in lukewarm water with mild detergent (optional)
  • Avoid direct and repeated rubbing against light surfaces or other fabrics to minimize color transfer
  • If using a washing machine choose a gentle setting without spinning
  • Hang-dry away from direct sunlight
